Brief
This exciting transformation provides cutting-edge facilities for the Esports course launched in September 2025.
We were initially commissioned to produce a Viability Assessment for converting an existing building on the University of Suffolk’s Ipswich campus into teaching facilities for the new BA (Hons) Esports course. Following a positive outcome, the project received the go-ahead, and our team was appointed to deliver the full refurbishment of the building on Long Street, providing a full multidisciplinary turn-key solution.
Key Info
Location:
Ipswich, Suffolk

University of Suffolk
Contractor:
Barnes Construction
Completion Date:
August 2025
Project Value:
£1.65m
Scope
A full fit-out was completed to include new wayfinding and room signage and immersive LED lighting, creating an engaging Esports environment for prospective students.
Weekly meetings were held with the University of Suffolk and our Key Account Manager. From the project’s inception, Concertus collaborated closely with the Estates Directorate, providing support to secure funding approval and establish a strong foundation for the project. Leveraging our extensive experience, we developed a programme capable of meeting the ambitious delivery timeline.
The site underwent comprehensive refurbishment, incorporating architectural and interior design enhancements, a complete overhaul of new building services, and external landscape works. Our team of designers worked in close collaboration with the University and specialist third-party contractors to develop a bespoke, high-specification solution to support the delivery of the new Esports course. The design features exposed soffits and services, all finished in black to complement the industrial aesthetic.
With sustainability at the forefront, the project involved repurposing a long-derelict building, avoiding the environmental impact of a new build. Externally, new landscaping softened the building’s façade, incorporating vibrant accents in the University of Suffolk’s signature yellow. This bold yellow was also used internally, creating a striking contrast against the black-painted services and contribute to a unique and modern design. The blend of historic architecture with contemporary internal elements further elevates the visual impact of the refurbishment.
The building’s ground floor accommodates a teaching space, while the first floor houses a professional-grade broadcasting gallery, podcasting suite, and dedicated gaming zone. These high-spec facilities offer students industry-standard experiences, preparing them for careers in the fast-growing Esports sector.
