Scope
Concertus has been working on projects to develop the campus at Sybil Andrews Academy since 2015 when we were asked to design and build the first teaching block.
Our team were pleased to continue supporting Suffolk County Council and the Academy, and ensure children in Suffolk can be educated in an inspiring environment which encourages them to fulfil their potential.
The Architecture team implemented their template design for SEND units, reducing timescales and costs across the project. Our template design was developed specifically for this site to ensure the client and end user’s requirements were met. We also held regular meetings with the client and managers of the Academy to make sure we were accommodating their needs. Our multi-disciplined team worked collaboratively and built on lessons learnt from working on previous SEND schemes to create a secure learning environment which allows pupils to develop independence and self-confidence. Feedback from Headteachers was also implemented to further build upon what works well, for example robust construction and ironmongery. Brick was chosen for robustness and green cladding used to blend in with the existing school buildings. The design also includes carefully planned outdoor spaces with green canopies that will help elevate the learning environment by encouraging outdoor learning.
Our team were sensitive to the pupils’ needs at all stages of the design process. Subtle tones were used throughout the interior, and we made sure we followed an acoustic report which included acoustic treatment for ceilings, walls, and carpet tiles.

Result
This project enables Sybil Andrews Academy to provide specialist places for pupils in an environment which is appropriate for their needs and within a mainstream school.
Our team worked closely with each other and the client to ensure the tight deadline could be met. The Academy are very happy with the result, and pupils are enjoying their welcoming and exciting new facility.
It has been a privilege to continue supporting Suffolk County Council with their programme of works to increase SEND capacity in the county, reducing the need for costly placements outside of Suffolk.
