Brief
With growing numbers projected over the next five years due to housing developments in the area and teaching space at its limit, Derbyshire County Council needed us to provide additional teaching space, while avoiding alterations to the existing space.
In addition to the new teaching area, the design needed to include space to store coats and include toilet facilities for staff and pupils. The design required us to maximise the use of natural light and ventilation.

Scope
The location of the new block was determined by Derbyshire County Council Property and the school at the feasibility stage, to suit the Keystage area of the school’s classrooms and play areas.
The location was close to a treed area, so we had to work with a tree protection officer to minimise the number of trees removed from the location. It was also a requirement to keep all soil on site after being removed from its existing location.
The area of the site chosen for the location was a grassed area that gently banks between the existing school building and the site boundary. The bank was excavated and a new retaining wall was constructed so that the new building could match the floor and roof level of the existing school and sit lower, this reduced the visual impact to adjacent properties and removed the need for ramping and level access to both external doors of the classroom.
Result
The new classroom offers pupils a new learning space and the creation of this space future-proofs the school.
All trees that were removed, were replaced with new ones being planted. Also, to keep the soil on-site as requested by the client, we created a new hilled area for students to play.
