Celebrating 12 years of Concertus with Matthew Self
From starting his journey with aspirations in law to discovering his passion for architecture, our Managing Director, Mat’s path hasn’t been without challenges.
After overcoming academic hurdles and navigating the world of design, he found his true calling in architecture while working with Suffolk County Council. His commitment to collaboration and continuous learning shaped him into the inspiring leader he is today.
With this new Legacy series, we look forward to encompassing colleagues’ achievements, celebrating their impact on the built environment, and sharing the lessons they have learnt along the way. You can read our full Q&A with Mat here.
Community centre re-opens following £2.3 million refurbishment
This was an exciting project for Concertus, working in collaboration with Castle Point Borough Council and SEH French Limited to deliver this significant refurbishment project at The Paddocks Community Centre.
The refurbishment scope was identified as part of condition improvement plans. It included work on both the interior and exterior and an upgrade to electrics, heating, lighting, and ventilation systems. The project has had a positive impact on not only the building’s fabric and energy performance but also the local community.
Works complete at Unstone Junior School
Great photos were taken at Unstone Junior School after the completion of roofing work in Derbyshire recently. Using a drone has many advantages, such as eliminating various health and safety risks associated with defect inspections.
Working for Derbyshire County Council, we were tasked with replacing the roof due to the existing roof’s age. The main roof features a clay tile finish with stone copings, and we have also installed new aluminium guttering. Additionally, we included extra insulation, membranes, and ventilation that meet the building’s ecological requirements.
Celebrating pupil experience as Autism Centre of Excellence officially opens in Biggleswade
We are pleased to have delivered a dedicated and inclusive space for students at Stratton School in Biggleswade in partnership with Central Bedfordshire Council.
The school’s new Autism Centre of Excellence (ACE) provides a safe and supportive environment where students can access tailored learning, structured support, and specialist resources.
The centre has already helped young people feel more confident, comfortable, and able to engage fully in their learning, with one student highlighting the ‘independence’ that the new centre allows him to have. You can find out more about the project here.
New SEND block starts on site
We have started on site to deliver a new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) block at Ipswich Academy with SEH French Limited.
Working with Suffolk County Council and Paradigm Trust, this development will help the school cater to students with diverse needs, with specially designed facilities for 24 Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students with cognition and learning difficulties.
The new two-classroom block will ensure that every child, regardless of their learning journey, has the support they need to thrive. We look forward to sharing updates as this project progresses in the coming months.

New interim guidance from EHRC
The Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC) recently released interim guidance on the practical implications of the recent UK Supreme Court ruling that a person’s ‘sex’ means biological sex under the Equality Act 2010 while the statutory and non-statutory guidance is updated, specifically regarding the facilities provided for staff, members of the public, and pupils.
This guidance presents a unique opportunity for businesses and institutions to ensure their estates are compliant and inclusive. At Concertus, we specialise in helping clients assess and optimise their spaces to align with the latest regulations and best practices. Whether it’s enhancing accessibility or ensuring compliance with new guidance, our team is here to support you every step of the way.
We are already helping existing clients with their estates to create environments that respect the needs of all individuals. For more information on how we can help you, email us at enquires@concertus.co.uk. You can read the full update here.
